Hindu Religious Significance: The religious significance of Diwali varies regionally within India, depending on the school of Hindu philosophy. Many other Hindus believe Diwali is linked to the celebration of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and wife of god Vishnu. The night of Diwali is the day Lakshmi chose Vishnu as her husband and then married him. Some Hindus offer pujas to additional god such as Kali, Ganesha, Saraswati, and Kubera. In India’s eastern region, such as West Bangal, Lakshmi is not worshipped, only deity Kali is worshipped and the festival is called Kali Puja. In West, South and certain Northern parts of India, the festival of Diwali marks the start of a new Hindu year. Along with Goddess Lakshmi, offerings are made to Ganesha.

Fair: The festivals of Diwali, fairs are held throughout India. Girls and women dress attractively during the festival. They wear colourful clothing and new jewellery, and their hands are decorated with beautiful design. Fairs are found in many towns and villages. A fair generally becomes a market day in the countryside when farmers buy and sell produce, and rural families shop for clothes. Fairs are very important for every festival. The village fair is very interesting for children, men and women and old people.
